Global Health Program
Overview
SMI is launching a Global Health Program to promote best practices in the donation and re-use of medical equipment and supplies beyond our borders. SMI has cultivated a powerful network of healthcare providers, suppliers, distributors, and innovators, all committed to strengthening the healthcare supply chain. Now, there’s an opportunity to extend this collaborative strength beyond the U.S. healthcare system to tackle pressing global health challenges. This program was inspired by a mission trip to Africa in 2024.
During the 2024 trip to Zambia , organized in partnership with SMI’s member AdventistHealth, Christine Arme, Justin Freed, Lisa Hohman, Jane Pleasants, and Karen Conway witnessed firsthand the urgent need for supply chain expertise in the region. Meetings with Common Wellbeing (a social impact organization dedicated to empowering local changemakers in Africa), government agencies, and local hospital leaders underscored the importance of providing critical medical equipment and supplies where they are needed the most.

In Zambia, access to clean water is a daily struggle. Women and girls walk long distances to fetch water, often from unsafe sources, impacting health, education, and economic opportunities. This project aims to change that by building a reliable solar-powered community water system for all 700 residents. Those of us who visited Zambia were touched by the critical need for water to not only provide for families, but significantly impacting the ability of rural communities to generate the only source of income – growing vegetables to sell at the market.
We welcome you to join us in making clean water a reality.
